Experiencing incontinence as a female athlete
While it isn’t the biggest discussed topic within the female health realm, it is certainly more prevalent than you’d expect, especially in elite athletes. Incontinence is known as a condition that causes leakage of urine or stool, often unintentionally.
While it can be caused by an array of things, the prominence of incontinence in female athletes is often due to the high impact of exercise. In fact, research demonstrates that a mere 5.56% of those engaging in low impact sport experienced continence problems in comparison to 80% of those who perform high impact activities such as trampolining.
Aside from hindering athletic pursuits, it can also be extremely embarrassing and impact one’s quality of life.
If you’re experiencing incontinence, we encourage you to seek medical advice.
